Bille Brown Studio
Queensland Theatre Company moved into its headquarters at 78 Montague Road, South Brisbane in July 2002. The premises are a
renovation of the old Evans Deakin Industries building and a little known pre-Federation brewery. Blending with the existing structure
is a new building housing the Company’s flagship rehearsal and performance studio, recently named in honour of Queensland performing
arts icon Bille Brown.
Queensland Theatre Company's three-storey building features rehearsal studios, performance venue, a foyer and bar accessible during public performances, wardrobe and props manufacturing departments, management and administration offices, ticket sales office, as well as writing and production facilities. The Company’s set construction workshop is located next door.
Copper and galvanised steel gates mark the entrance to Queensland Theatre Company’s new home, commissioned from artist Julie Romaniuk, who says:
"The gate has three elements - the central layer, in copper, refers not only to the actors' craft of gesture and mime but also to the gestured life of human beings. They are asymmetrical, idiosyncratic and reside between two outer layers of galvanized steel bars. These outer layers refer to stage curtains opening, boundaries stretched and things partially seen and observed. The uneven spacing of the steel bars allowing intersection at seemingly random points, refers to connections between actors and audience within the experience of theatre."

The entry courtyard, with the Queensland Bottle Tree, creates a real sense of place and was Besse – after its donor Besse Jackson, who grew the tree herself in Quilpie and donated it to the Company to introduce an element of nature into the new urban space for theatre-goers.
