Beckett x 3
Three short plays by Samuel Beckett
Suitable for Years 10 – 12
“Every word is like an unnecessary stain on silence and nothingness.”
- Samuel Beckett
“Words are all we have.”
- Samuel Beckett
Synopsis
Beckett won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1969 and is widely regarded as the father of Absurdist theatre. The first of the three short plays the Company will present is
Act Without Words II
, a mime piece which highlights the mundaneness of daily life as depicted by two tramps. Secondly,
Play
is a devastating recollection of a love triangle gone sour told from the funeral urns in which the three characters now rest. Finally,
Not I
is an endless stream of words spoken by a character who, after years of an apparent inability to speak, now seems unwilling to stop speaking at all.
