2008 In-School Workshops include:
Directing Theatre
25 – 29 February
Acting is thousands of years old but the role of the director has only just turned 100. What brought about the need for a director and what does a director actually do? This workshop will explore approaches to directing in the pre-production and rehearsal stages with an emphasis on the director’s relationship with image, text and actors. Students will direct short scenes and present their work at the end of the workshop.
Playwriting with Maxine Mellor
10 – 14 March
Playwriting can involve a lot more than a pen and paper. Multi-award winning playwright Maxine Mellor, whose plays include
Magda’s Fascination with Was Cats and
Fading Franky Knight with Wooden Eyes Watching or Handicraft will inspire students to get their creative ink flowing with a series of impulse exercises designed to stimulate fresh ideas for writing. The second half of the workshop will focus on tips and tricks about the writing process via approaches to form, structure, character and genre.
Brecht and Political Theatre
28 April – 2 May
Political theatre can be fun, irreverent and anarchic. It is a form of social satire with an underlying urgency to question the current state of the world. This workshop looks at approaches to staging political theatre with a focus on alienation, gestus and other techniques that Brecht canonised through his art and theory. Reference will be made to other well known playwrights including Caryl Churchill, Augusto Boal and Adriano Shaplin. Some examples of Brecht’s work will be performed by the artists and the workshop will conclude with students devising their own piece of political theatre.
Exploring Shakespeare
21 – 25 July
This workshop will look at exciting ways to access Shakespeare’s language through physical work, text analysis, performance styles and voice work. Two actors will perform short scenes from Shakespeare’s canon and help craft group performances with all participants. At the time of booking, we will discuss what texts your students are using and tailor the workshop to suit.
Primary School Drama
1 – 5 September
Introduce your primary students to the magical world of theatre through drama games that encourage children to learn about spatial focus, trust and movement. This is a great way to encourage group activity, boost confidence levels and most importantly, have fun while learning about drama. The workshop is flexible in structure and content depending on the Year level of your students.
Monologues and Audition Pieces
13 – 17 October
Working with two Queensland Theatre Company actors, students will craft monologues for performance outcomes using a variety of contemporary Australian and international scripts. Performing monologues is essential for auditioning and is a great way to strengthen forming and presenting tasks. The actors will also perform monologue pieces as well as provide insight into preparing, refining and presenting monologues for auditions and productions.
