First Timers Guide
That Face (2009)
Helen Howard and Eugene Gilfedder
Whether it's your first time at the theatre, or you're bringing along some first-time theatre-goers with you, we've put together a few hints to help everyone have a great night out.
What to wear – there isn’t a dress code for theatre. It’s really up to you. Maybe you’re on a date, or just catching
up with friends. Wear what you normally do on those occasions. You never know who you’ll meet at the theatre so it’s a
good idea to avoid thongs and shorts. It can also be cold in the theatres so bring a jacket or scarf if you’re likely to
feel the chill from air-conditioning.
When to get there – Doors to the theatre open around one hour before the show starts. If you arrive with plenty of
time to spare you can get a drink from the bar and buy a program to find out a bit more about the show you're going
to see. It’s always a good idea to arrive early for ticket collection and to be in your seat before the show. Late arrivals
often have to wait to get into the theatre until a suitable break in the performance, because it’s very distracting for the actors and audience.
What to do during the show – laugh, applaud and enjoy. It’s your reactions that let actors know you’re interested and enjoying
the show. Please remember to turn off your mobile phones and that flash photography isn’t allowed inside the theatre. And
everyone loves fan mail!
