The Crucible
By Arthur Miller

The Crucible (2009)

Francesca Savige as Abigail

Overview

Hysteria, accusations and rumours run wild as a group of young girls wield a mesmerising power over the citizens of Salem.

Abigail Williams and her friends are caught dancing in the woods late at night. To avoid punishment they claim to have been seduced by witchcraft.

Moral panic spreads through Salem as Abigail accuses many of the leading townsfolk, including the well-respected John Proctor and his wife Elizabeth, of worshipping the devil.

As the community begins to tear itself apart, no one dares question the girls’ accusations, for fear of being denounced themselves.

But are the girls telling the truth, or merely lying for their own benefit?

Unjustly condemned by the ferocious Judge Danforth, Proctor and the other accused are faced with a final, terrible moral choice: confess to a crime which they did not commit, or maintain their innocence and hang.

A cast of 19 actors will bring to life the Company’s contemporary take on this gripping masterpiece that remains a profound plea for honesty, courage and reason.
