1. Does Queensland Theatre Company consider unsolicited scripts?
Yes, but unsolicited scripts will only be read from playwrights who satisfy one of the following criteria:
- The professional production of at least one script.
- A professional workshop or reading of the submitted script.
- The submitted script has been forwarded by a theatrical agent.
- The submitted script has been recommended to the Company by a theatre professional known to the Company.
- The submitted script has been recommended to the Company by a theatre company or script development agency known to the company and with the most recent complete reviews/reports attached.
2. What is the best way to bring a script to your attention?
The writer should direct all enquiries to Queensland Theatre Company. Brief support material can accompany the script, such as reviews of productions of the script, cv etc. If the play has been professionally assessed, please attach a copy of the assessment to the script submission. The writer can contact Queensland Theatre Company for answers to specific questions or to clarify the eligibility of his/her script in order to be accepted as an unsolicited manuscript.
3. Is there any kind of material for which you specifically look?
Queensland Theatre Company is committed to producing timeless classics from the world's dramatic repertoire, as well as modern classics and the best of new plays from Australia and overseas. The development of Queensland work is given strong emphasis. There are no restrictions on content, however writers are encouraged to be aware of the current work of the company.
4. When is the best time of year to forward a script to you?
It is hard to predict high and low times. Writers can contact Queensland Theatre Company beforehand to find out the current waiting period.
5. Do you acknowledge receipt of all scripts? If so, in what form?
Yes, Queensland Theatre Company will send the writer an acknowledgment letter that also states the script reference number the script has been allocated.
6. How long should a playwright expect to wait for a decision on the submission?
Best efforts are made within the company to try and respond within three months. Sometimes, however, this isn't practical, and longer delays may occur before a decision is made. The writer's patience is greatly appreciated.
7. Do you return all scripts or only those that have a stamped, self-addressed envelope attached?
Writers should enclose a stamped self-addressed envelope if they wish to have their scripts returned.
8. Please specify any restrictions you have on cast size.
Each case is considered on its merit.
9. Please specify any other restrictions you have, for example type of setting, type of play (no one-act plays, etc), content/subject matter.
Works specifically aimed at child and youth audiences are less likely to be considered.
10. Who else can help me with script assessments or avenues for submission of unsolicited scripts?
Playlab and
PlayWriting Australia both provide script assessment services.
